A peaceful protest in Southport took a violent turn as a large group of individuals, believed to be supporters of the Anti-Muslim mob clashed with police near a local mosque on St Luke’s Road.

The disturbance began around 19:45 when protesters started throwing objects at the mosque. As police attempted to contain the situation, they were met with escalating violence. Officers reported that bottles and wheelie bins were hurled at them, resulting in injuries and damage to police vehicles.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police stated, “What began as a peaceful protest quickly escalated into a violent confrontation. Our officers were on the scene to ensure public safety and maintain order, but they faced significant hostility from the crowd. Several officers have sustained injuries, and multiple police vehicles have been damaged.

The police have confirmed that additional units were dispatched to the area to manage the situation and prevent further violence. The force is urging the public to avoid the area while the situation is brought under control.

Witnesses described the scene as chaotic and frightening. “It was supposed to be a peaceful demonstration, but it quickly got out of hand,” said one local resident. “The police did their best to keep things under control, but the protesters were very aggressive.”

The local mosque, which was the target of the initial aggression, has not reported any injuries among its congregation. Leaders of the mosque have called for calm and urged their community to stay indoors until the situation is resolved.
