The NYPD has released new images of a person of interest in connection with the shocking murder of Brian Thompson, CEO of UnitedHealthcare, who was gunned down outside the Hilton hotel in Midtown Manhattan on Wednesday.
Authorities believe the attack was premeditated and targeted, leaving the healthcare industry and New York’s business community reeling.
Thompson, 55, was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after police responded to reports of gunfire outside the Hilton Midtown on West 53rd Street. Investigators have ruled out robbery or random violence, pointing to evidence that suggests the killing was carefully planned.
“Everything we’ve seen indicates this was a deliberate and calculated attack,” NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban said during a press conference. “We are actively pursuing all leads, but we need the public’s assistance to bring the perpetrator to justice.”
Police are urging anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477). A reward of up to $10,000 is being offered for information leading to an arrest and conviction.
A Targeted Killing
The high-profile nature of the crime has raised questions about executive security. Thompson, who led the nation’s largest health insurer, was known for advocating healthcare system reforms and expanding access to services. His death has sent shockwaves through the healthcare industry.
“It’s a tragic loss, not only for his family and colleagues but for the millions of people he worked to serve,” UnitedHealthcare said in a statement. “We are cooperating fully with law enforcement and hope for a swift resolution to this investigation.”
NYPD Investigation Intensifies
Authorities have declined to speculate on a motive, but sources close to the investigation suggest that Thompson’s prominent role in the healthcare sector could be a factor. Forensic teams are exploring surveillance footage, and additional officers have been deployed in Midtown as the investigation continues.
New York Mayor Eric Adams called the incident “deeply troubling” and assured the public that the city would “exhaust every resource” to apprehend the perpetrator.
