Emergency services rushed to a major fire in Lewes in the early hours of Monday after a bus erupted in flames at a petrol station.

Fire Erupts on Brighton Road

england/south-east/east-sussex/”>england/south-east/east-sussex/”>East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service (ESFRS) were alerted at 2:09am on 29 September 2025 about a large vehicle fire on Brighton Road, heading east between Lewes and Falmer.

The fire started on a bus but quickly spread to the petrol station Shopshop, sparking a major incident.

Massive Firefight with Six Breathing Apparatus Deployed

  • Four fire engines from preston/”>preston/”>Preston Circus, Hove and Roedean scrambled to the scene.
  • Firefighters initially fought the blaze using two sets of breathing apparatus and two foam jets.
  • By 3:30am, the response escalated to six sets of breathing apparatus, two foam jets, and one main jet.

Sussex Police are on hand managing traffic chaos while crews battle-wales/”>battle the flames.

Warning to Drivers and Locals

Authorities have urged drivers to avoid Brighton Road altogether. Residents nearby have been advised to keep windows and doors firmly shut due to thick smoke.

Fortunately, there have been no reports of injuries so far.
