£19K Worth of Illegal Ciggies Nabbed in Barking and Dagenham Raids
Over £19,000 worth of dodgy tobacco has been ripped off the streets in a major crackdown across Barking and Dagenham.
25,000 Illicit Cigarettes and More Seized
Trading standards officers swooped on six shops after complaints and undercover probes. Over two days, they bagged 25,000 illegal cigarettes and more than 100 packs of hand-rolling tobacco hidden in clever secret compartments.
On September 25 and 27, the raids targeted 13 locations known for dodgy tobacco sales, especially those that had failed previous test buys.
Tobacco Sniffer Dogs Crack Down on Crime
Thanks to expert tobacco detection dogs, the teams uncovered products stashed using secret chutes and traps. The haul’s estimated street value? A whopping £19,061.
Illegal tobacco sales are more than just a health hazard—they often link to organised crime, people trafficking, and exploitation.
“This operation sends a clear message that we will not tolerate illegal tobacco sales in our borough,” said Councillor Syed Ghani, cabinet member for enforcement and community safety.
“These products not only harm public health but also fuel criminal networks. I want to thank our trading standards team for their tireless work in protecting residents and keeping our communities safe.”
