A massive illegal tobacco factory in Newry, Northern Ireland, has been smashed by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) in a dramatic raid.

State-of-the-Art Operation Capable of 1.5 Million Cigarettes a Day

The top-secret factory was equipped with cutting-edge technology, including professional extraction systems, sound-insulated walls, and pricey machines. It was capable of churning out a staggering 1.5 million cigarettes daily.

Authorities seized over 1.25 million cigarettes and nine tonnes of tobacco—worth more than £3 million in unpaid duty.

Seven Arrested as Organised Crime Take a Hit

Seven men were arrested on suspicion of cheating the tax system under the Customs and Excise Management Act (1979). The crackdown delivers a major blow to organised criminals behind the illicit tobacco trade, HMRC said.

“This was one of the most sophisticated tobacco factories we have ever uncovered in Northern Ireland and this will be a significant blow to the organised criminals we believe are behind it,” said Dermot Clarke, Operational Lead at HMRC’s Fraud Investigation Service.

“The illicit tobacco trade steals money from public services, undercuts legitimate businesses, and funds other crimes that impact our communities.”

Investigations are ongoing, and HMRC urges the public to report any information about illegal tobacco or alcohol sales online.
