Bomb scare sends Sheerness beach into lockdown after a suspected WWII bomb was unearthed near the seafront swimming pool this morning. Emergency services raced to the scene, sparking panic and a major safety hunt.

Tide Halts Bomb Squad Operation

The Army’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team arrived swiftly but were forced to delay the defusal. An incoming tide blocked safe access to the device, pushing back critical bomb disposal until low tide.

The delay kept the beach on edge as officials scrambled to secure the area.

Seafront Locked Down, Beach Closed

Police cordoned off the entire seafront, shutting the beach to all visitors. Emergency crews maintained a tight perimeter, prioritising safety amid fears over the bomb’s condition and the dangers it posed.

Locals Recall Dark Wartime Shadow

Kent 999s, an eyewitness on Twitter, said: “SHEERNESS: Emergency services were called to the seafront near the Swimming Pool this morning after a suspected wartime bomb was discovered on the beach. An incoming tide meant the Army disposal team could not deal with it until low tide.”

The find has brought reminders of Sheerness’ wartime blitz and ongoing risks from buried wartime explosives. Residents remain on alert.
