SAILOR DRAMA Needles Coastguard Rescue Battles Storm to Save Sailing Boat

Long hours and tough conditions marked this week’s dramatic rescue effort off the Isle of Wight.

Stranded Sailor Drama at Scratchels Bay

On Monday, 10th November, the Needles Coastguard Rescue Team was scrambled after the Needles Coastwatch spotted a sailing vessel stranded off Scratchels Bay.

The scene was tricky. Scratchels Bay is only reachable by boat or rope, both impossible under the savage weather. The team headed to Tennyson’s Rocket Site to get a better view.

They found a small sailing boat wrecked, with lifejackets and debris washed ashore. Fearing people could be trapped at the cliff base, the team called in air support.

The Daedalus-based Rescue 375 helicopter performed an intense aerial search with high-tech cameras. Lifeboats joined the operation, scouring the coastline and sea with multiple refuelling stops.

Thankfully, no people were found. Investigation revealed the boat had broken loose from French moorings and drifted across, breaking apart on UK shores. The rescue team stood down after dark.

False Alarm for Fossil Hunters Cut Off by Tide

The very next evening, Tuesday 11th November, the team rushed out again. Reports came in of torchlight near the cliff base and fears of people cut off by the rising tide.

The group turned out to be fossil hunters, safe but caught out by the tide. Coastguards provided essential safety advice before the group continued without incident.

Vital Safety Warning

Always check tide times! Many accidents happen in fading light or rough weather.

If you spot anyone in trouble along the coast, call 999 immediately and ask for the Coastguard.
