Brutal Prison Officer Attack Sends Inmate Back Behind Bars for 7½ Years

A savage assault on a prison officer at HMP Dovegate has landed inmate Daouda Sy an extra seven and a half years in jail. Sy, already serving 12 years for a machete attack on a civilian, launched the vicious attack on the officer in January 2023.

The guard suffered serious injuries to his face, eye, head, and neck, requiring hospital treatment after the brutal assault.

Court Delivers Justice at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court

Daouda Sy was convicted of wounding with intent at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court. Not only was he handed a hefty sentence increase, but his licence period was also extended by five years.

This case highlights the real dangers prison officers face daily while working behind bars.

Prison Officers Under Constant Threat

  • Prison staff regularly face violent and unpredictable inmates serving serious sentences.
  • They deal with improvised weapons and volatile standoffs on a daily basis.
  • Rising assaults have led to the introduction of body armour and Tasers for trained officers.

From breaking up fights to emergency responses, prison officers risk their lives to keep prisons safe and support offender rehabilitation.

Community Rallies Behind Injured Officer

We join many in wishing the injured officer a swift and full recovery. Their courage and resilience in such hostile conditions demand respect and recognition.
