Speed Demon Jailed After High-Speed Police Chase in Cranleigh
A 26-year-old man from Guildford has been locked up for dangerous driving following a dramatic police pursuit through Cranleigh in April.
Chase Ends with Tyre Deflation Device
Jamie Jayson Cansell, of Ashbury Crescent, was spotted speeding erratically in a black Fiat Punto at around 3am on 2 April. When police ordered him to stop, he refused and led officers on a 17-minute high-speed chase across Cranleigh and Bramley.
Police used tactical pursuit and containment tactics, deploying tyre deflation devices three times before finally bringing the Fiat to a halt. Thankfully, no one was hurt during the dangerous incident.
Sixteen Months Inside and Years Off the Road
Cansell pleaded guilty at Guildford Magistrates’ Court to multiple charges, including driving dangerously, driving without a valid licence, using a vehicle without insurance, and failing to provide a sample for analysis.
On 7 June, Guildford Crown Court handed him a 16-month prison sentence. He’s also been banned from driving for three years and eight months and must pass an extended driving test before getting back behind the wheel. His driving record has been endorsed accordingly.
Road Policing Unit Warns: Reckless Driving Puts Everyone at Risk
“Cansell’s driving on the night in question was extremely dangerous, and it is fortunate that nobody was hurt as a result of his actions,” said Sergeant Gary Lefort from the Roads Policing Unit.
“Driving recklessly puts everyone on the road at risk, not just the driver. Thanks to the hard work of officers, Cansell will now be held accountable for his behaviour and will be unable to return to the roads until he has proven himself safe to do so.”
