Hull HGV Driver Jailed for Fatal M1 Crash

A Hull man has been sentenced at Sheffield Crown Court for causing two deaths by careless driving on the M1 in June 2019.

Deadly Crash at M1 Junction 34

Prezemyslaw Zbigniew Szuba, 40, of Kingston Upon Hull, pleaded guilty to two counts of causing death by careless or inconsiderate driving. On June 7, 2019, around 8:15am, Szuba was driving a Heavy Goods Vehicle near Junction 34 on the M1 when he collided with 44-year-old Jason Mercer and 22-year-old Alexandru Murgeanu.

Jason and Alexandru had stopped in the first lane after a minor crash to swap details when Szuba’s HGV struck them. Both men died instantly at the scene.

Justice for Victims’ Families

“My thoughts are firstly with the families of both Jason and Alexandru,” said Sergeant Mark Bradey of the Serious Collisions Unit. “They have not only lost their loved ones but had to relive the tragedy through court proceedings. Szuba accepted responsibility by pleading guilty and spared the families further distress with a trial.”

“I hope today’s sentencing provides some closure for their loved ones.”

Sentence Delivered

Szuba was handed a 10-month prison sentence and banned from driving for four years and five months.
