Carlisle Man Admits Manslaughter After Easter Stabbing Tragedy
Blair Dixon, 25, from Carlisle, has pleaded guilty to manslaughter following the fatal stabbing of John Cingelis, 37, in Harraby. Dixon also admitted to causing grievous bodily harm to another man during the violent Easter Sunday incident.
Fatal Stabbing on Easter Sunday
On April 12, emergency services responded to a distress call reporting two stabbing victims. One man said he had been stabbed in the arm, while his friend had been stabbed in the chest. Paramedics found John Cingelis unresponsive at his Brantwood Avenue home. Despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene. A post-mortem confirmed a single stab wound as the cause of death.
The other victim, with a slash wound to his arm, was treated at Cumberland Infirmary and later discharged.
Investigation Reveals Tragic Origins
Detective Chief Inspector Jenny Beattie, leading North Cumbria’s crime team, described the case as “tragic” and sparked by a petty dispute over clothing.
“This shows any knife use in a dispute can end in serious injury or even death,” said DCI Beattie. “While Cumbria doesn’t face the knife crime problems seen elsewhere, we must never be complacent.”
“Dixon’s actions have left a family grieving. John Cingelis’ life was cut tragically short.”
She also praised the courage of Mr Cingelis’ family and thanked the public who helped the investigation.
Sentencing and Family Statement
Dixon had first faced murder charges, which he denied, but these were dropped in favour of manslaughter. A 25-year-old man initially charged with murder was cleared, with the judge ruling no case to answer.
Dixon will serve 12 years for manslaughter, with concurrent sentences of two years for causing grievous bodily harm and one year for knife possession.
The late victim’s family issued a heartfelt statement:
“John’s death has profoundly affected us all. It’s hard to grasp how something so trivial could lead to such a loss.
“John faced struggles, but he had the biggest heart. He would do anything for anyone, and we will miss him forever.”
