Drunk man jailed for spitting and threatening to stab police officers in Leamington

Drunken rampage ends with prison sentence

Andrew Huxley, 48, was caught drunk in Jephson Gardens, Leamington, on Monday 22 February. Police officers tried to do the right thing and escort him safely back to his home on Kenilworth Road.

Threats and assault on officers

Instead of cooperating, Huxley launched a violent attack. He threatened to stab one officer and violently assaulted two emergency workers. He even spat at them — a vile act during a pandemic.

Justice served at Coventry Magistrates’ Court

Last week, Huxley pleaded guilty to common assault of an emergency worker, assault by beating, and using threatening behaviour. He was promptly sentenced to seven months in jail.

Police punch back with strong words

Chief Superintendent Ben Smith blasted the attack: “The officers were simply trying to help Huxley. To be assaulted in this way is completely unacceptable and it is right he has received a custodial sentence.”

“Spitting is disgusting at any time, but it is even more despicable in the middle of a pandemic when officers are working so hard to help stop the spread of Covid.”
