Rugby Man Jailed for Knife and Cannabis Offences After Police Chase
Suspect Spotted Acting Shady in Bath Street
Calvin Mukwamiri, 22, of Castle Combe, Rugby, was hauled before Coventry Magistrates Court last Friday (14 May) after a Warwickshire Police probe. The drama began back on 17 September 2020 when undercover CID officers on patrol near Bath Street noticed three men behaving suspiciously.
When police stepped in to question them, Mukwamiri bolted on his bike, sparking a tense foot chase.
Chased Down and Caught with Knives and Cannabis
The officers quickly caught Mukwamiri, who abandoned his rucksack during the escape attempt. Inside, they found two knives. A search also revealed he was carrying cannabis.
Mukwamiri admitted to two charges: possession of a Class B drug and carrying a knife in public.
Sentenced to Jail Time and Fine
- 4 weeks in prison plus a £128 fine for cannabis possession (funding victim services)
- 20 weeks in prison for carrying a knife in a public place
The sentences will run back-to-back, meaning Mukwamiri faces nearly six months behind bars.
Police Crack Down on Youth Violence
Detective Constable Robert Garrison, Proactive CID Rugby, said: “We welcome the court’s decision to issue a custodial sentence in this case. In March, we launched Operation Reduce to cut violent crime in Rugby, especially among young people. We’ll keep using Stop and Search and other tactics to protect our community.”
