Family Still Seeks Answers 20 Years After Damien Duffy’s Belfast Murder
Detective Superintendent Jason Murphy revealed that Damien Duffy’s family is haunted by unanswered questions two decades after his tragic death.
Back in May 2001, 18-year-old Damien was stabbed outside a bar on Stewartstown Road, Belfast. He succumbed to his injuries in hospital on 4th June. The violent incident left 13 others hurt and rushed to hospital.
Major Police Operation Launched
The police acted fast, launching a full murder investigation. They arrested 14 people, carried out 22 searches, and collected over 380 witness statements. One suspect faced murder charges, another attempted murder. Twelve more were sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
On 25th November 2003, at Craigavon Crown Court, ten defendants pled guilty to 17 related charges. However, the core murder and attempted murder charges were dropped.
Appeal for Witnesses as 20th Anniversary Nears
“I recognise that Damien’s family have carried unanswered questions for the past 20 years,” said Det. Supt. Murphy. “Our thoughts are with them as the anniversary approaches.”
