Care Workers Jailed for Abusing Disabled Woman in Essex

Two care workers in Essex have been slapped with prison sentences after abusing a vulnerable 43-year-old woman with Angelman Syndrome. The victim, who has the mental capacity of a toddler and limited speech, suffered horrific assaults while in their care.

Hidden Camera Uncovers Shocking Abuse

Her family’s suspicions grew after they noticed unexplained bruises and strange behaviour during visits to the colchester/" title="Colchester" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Colchester care home. Frustrated by the lack of answers and denial from staff, they installed a hidden camera in her living room.

The footage revealed carers Ann-Marie Young, 61, and Catherine Haining, 64, repeatedly hitting the woman with a TV remote and tin foil roll. They slapped, kicked, pulled her hair, and hurled insults at her. The abuse started within 20 minutes of the camera being installed and continued over three days.

Justice Served After Guilty Pleas

The pair were arrested and charged with ill-treatment and wilful neglect. They pleaded guilty at Colchester Magistrates’ Court and were each sentenced to eight months behind bars at Ipswich Crown Court on 2 September.

“We as a family are totally devastated by what has happened whilst in the trusted care of these individuals,” said the victim’s parents. “No one knows our daughters better than we do and we knew something wasn’t right. Ultimately we had to take matters into our own hands.”

The family praised Essex Police, especially DC Hannah Richardson, for their swift action and support.

Trauma Continues for Family and Victim

The victim now suffers from PTSD and has lost all trust in carers. The sisters, who shared a home for 13 years, have been separated due to Covid restrictions, adding to the family’s distress.

Detective Constable Hannah Richardson said: “This has been one of the most emotionally impactful investigations I have worked on. The lack of empathy shown by these carers is shocking. I hope the sentencing brings some closure to the family.”
