Carlisle Man Jailed After Brutal Head Stamping Attack
Graeme Thompson, 37, from Buchanan Road, Carlisle, has been handed a tough sentence after viciously assaulting a victim in a flat on Botchergate. Alongside jail time, he faces an extended three and a half year licence period once released.
Beastly Attack Leaves Victim Fighting for Life
Thompson repeatedly stamped on the victim’s head, causing fractures to the eye socket and jaw, plus a brain bleed. The horrific attack on August 20, 2020, left lasting damage.
Rachel Gent, 37, also from Carlisle, was involved and received a 20-month sentence earlier this year after admitting to a lesser assault charge.
Quick-Thinking Police and Paramedics Save Life
Detective Constable Richard Scoffham said the prompt intervention of emergency services likely saved the victim’s life.
“Had it not been for the prompt and effective actions of the police and paramedics responding to the scene on the day, it is likely the victim would have died,” Scoffham said.
Justice Served for a Violent Crime
Thompson pleaded guilty to intentionally causing grievous bodily harm and was sentenced at Carlisle Crown Court.
“Thompson has shown himself to be a violent and dangerous individual,” said Scoffham. “He will now serve a significant sentence for his despicable actions. Unfortunately, the victim will feel the impact of this assault for years to come. I hope this sentence reassures Cumbria that violent crime will not be tolerated.”
