Four Men Jailed Over Spike in Rural Vehicle Thefts
Detectives cracked down after nine theft incidents hit Keswick and Carlisle between February 2019 and October 2021. Operation Damask led to the arrests and charges of four men involved in stealing vehicles and burgling local farms and businesses.
Sentences Handed Down
- Patrick Young, 33, no fixed address – jailed for 3 years 9 months. Convicted of five car thefts, multiple burglaries, and intent to steal.
- Scott Walpole, 31, Maryport – 1 year 9 months in prison. Guilty of stealing a car and burglary.
- Rhys Wilkinson, 20, Carlisle – sentenced to 1 year 6 months for vehicle theft and dangerous driving.
- James Benson, 45, Carlisle – given a suspended sentence of 1 year 9 months for vehicle theft and burglary.
Rural Communities Targeted
“Cumbria is a predominantly rural county and unfortunately we have seen our rural communities targeted by opportunist criminals,” said Detective Constable Stuart Graham, Crime and Safeguarding Team.
“The defendants targeted multiple businesses and farms across Cumbria, stealing vehicles and disrupting local life. Some stolen vehicles were sold in the North East, while others were recovered locally.”
Police Warn: No Tolerance for Rural Crime
Detective Graham added: “I hope today’s sentences reassure businesses and rural communities that we are taking firm action. Burglary and vehicle theft will not be tolerated. Those caught will face swift investigation and prosecution.”
