Retired Teacher Jailed for Brutal Abuse at Prestigious Prep School

David John Hope, 74, has been locked up for 17 years after a damning court verdict revealed horrifying sexual abuse of a boy at Malsis School, Glusburn, in North Yorkshire.

The retired music teacher, once respected by parents and colleagues, was finally held to account at Bradford Crown Court on Monday, 28 February 2022, following a two-week trial.

Horrific Crimes from the 1980s Finally Exposed

  • Three counts of buggery
  • One count of gross indecency
  • Three counts of indecent assault

All offences date back to the 1980s but were only brought to light decades later. Hope was questioned in early 2018 after his victim bravely reported the abuse in December 2017.

The Non-Recent Abuse Investigation Team charged Hope in December 2019, and he appeared at Skipton Magistrates’ Court the following month. Alongside his lengthy jail term, he faces an extra year on licence and a lifetime Sexual Harm Prevention Order.

Victim’s Heartbreaking Statement: “My Childhood Was Ruined”

“It is hard to find the words to express the horrible impact Mr Hope has had on my life. I live over the incidents again and again. I struggled with school and left at 16. I couldn’t sleep properly for years because of it.”

“I felt responsible and hated myself. I attempted suicide twice as a teenager and suffer lifelong depression. I don’t trust men and have a deep mistrust of parents and teachers.”

“The impact on my personal life has been unbearable and affected those closest to me. Going to job interviews or being one-on-one with a man still causes panic.”

Detective: ‘A Monstrous Abuser Hiding Behind a Fake Mask’

Detective Constable Alison Morris of the Non-Recent Abuse Investigation Team condemned Hope’s actions:

“Hope wore a mask of respectability but was a monstrous child abuser. He used rape as a horrific punishment for minor misdemeanours, threatening his victim into silence.”

“This abuse caused unimaginable damage that still affects the victim today. It took decades before he found the courage to come forward in 2017.”

“The victim’s bravery throughout the trial has been extraordinary. Together with North Yorkshire Police, justice has been served.”

“This case reminds us it is never too late to report abuse and seek support.”
