Speed Demon Crashes into Pedestrian at Double Speed Limit
Jason Campbell was tearing down Broad Oak Road at over 60mph—double the 30mph limit—when he smashed into a pedestrian trying to cross. The crash left the man fighting for his life.
Too Fast to Stop
Kent Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit found Campbell slammed his brakes as he rounded the corner and spotted the man. But his reckless speed—between 62 and 63 mph on impact—made it impossible to avoid the collision.
Victim Left Seriously Injured
The pedestrian was rushed to hospital with multiple fractures including broken ribs and a shattered shoulder. An emergency blood transfusion was needed to save his life.
Campbell Faces Justice
Campbell, 52, from Vauxhall Avenue, canterbury/" title="Canterbury" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Canterbury, claimed he thought he was within the limit but later admitted dangerous driving causing serious injury. On Wednesday 18 May 2022, Canterbury Crown Court sentenced him to 2 years and 5 months behind bars.
He’s banned from driving for three-and-a-half years and must pass a fresh driving test before hitting the road again.
Detective Inspector Lynn Wilczek said: “This is a prime example of the importance of speed limits. Campbell’s decision to speed has cost an innocent person dearly, who is still suffering physically and mentally.
Speed limits aren’t targets to push—they’re there to keep everyone safe. Campbell took a corner too fast, couldn’t stop, and caused terrible injuries. He now pays the price. I hope this sentence makes drivers in Kent think twice before taking deadly risks.”
