Brutal Gang Jailed for Preying on Elderly Victims Across UK
A gang that conned dozens of elderly people out of nearly £300,000 has been slammed with 20 years and eight months behind bars at Bristol Crown Court.
Cold-Hearted Scam Targeted Vulnerable Seniors
Mohammed Rahman, Muhammed Maarjan, Muhammed Hussain, and Shoriful Islam pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit fraud by false representation. Rahman, Maarjan, and Islam also admitted to possession of criminal property.
The ruthless gang cold-called thousands of potential victims nationwide. They spun terrifying tales about fake police fraud investigations involving counterfeit money being deposited in victims’ bank accounts.
Scared stiff, victims – many over 75, some battling dementia or terminal illness – were urged to withdraw large sums and hand the cash over to “couriers” posing as police officers.
High-Speed Chase and Luxury Haul as Gang Busted
- The crime spree raked in over £290,000 from at least 60 victims between January and April 2021.
- Police from Gloucestershire and 20 other forces teamed up, working with City of London Police, to track the gang.
- Officers stormed a London property in April 2021. When the crooks tried to escape via a rooftop, they were pursued and captured.
- Seized in the swoop: stacks of cash, designer clothes, Rolexes, a Mercedes Benz, and an Audi.
Judge Delivers Stern Warning to Fraudsters
“You preyed on the frailty and trust of the elderly. You didn’t just steal their money – you destroyed their faith in banks and the police,” said Judge Michael Cullum.
“Many victims remain out of pocket due to your lies to banks. These were intelligent, retired people desperate to help the authorities but left humiliated and broken.”
Detective Inspector Matt Phillips praised the police team’s dedication. He warned other scammers they will be relentlessly pursued nationwide.
“After their arrest, courier fraud in Gloucestershire dropped to zero for months. This verdict sends a clear message: we will not stop hunting these criminals.”
More Sentencings to Come
Two more gang members, Kawsar Ahmed and Mohammed Ahmed, are due for sentencing on June 28.
Prosecutor Kevin Hansford highlighted the devastating impact on victims who lost life savings and now fear answering the phone or leaving their homes.
This tough sentence offers some justice and hope for thousands of vulnerable people targeted by scammers nationwide.
