People Smuggler Nabbed Over Channel Dinghy Tragedy
A man has been arrested in Gloucestershire over the deaths of at least 27 migrants who drowned crossing the English Channel last November. Harem Ahmed Abwbaker, 32, was picked up by the National Crime Agency (NCA) and the National Extradition Unit at a Cheltenham address at 6:45am today.
Behind the Deadly Crossing
Abwbaker is accused of being part of an organised crime gang that masterminded the doomed Channel crossing. The tiny dinghy capsized shortly after leaving the French coast, drowning all but two of those on board. Four others remain missing.
- The NCA tracked Abwbaker down working closely with French authorities.
- The gang allegedly smuggled desperate migrants in unsafe boats across the Channel to the UK.
- Abwbaker faces extradition and manslaughter charges linked to the deaths.
Justice for Victims
Following his arrest, Abwbaker will appear in Westminster Magistrates Court tomorrow where extradition proceedings will begin.
“This is a significant arrest,” said NCA Deputy Director Craig Turner. “The individual detained today is suspected of having played a key role in the manslaughter of those who died.”
“We are determined to get justice for the families and dismantle the cruel criminal networks behind this tragedy.”
Home Secretary Suella Braverman added: “My thoughts remain with the families affected by this horrendous incident. I thank the NCA and UK and French agencies for their tireless work to bring those responsible to justice.”
