Husband Jailed for Life After Setting Wife on Fire Outside Their Home

Thomas Rainey, 61, was sentenced to life in prison at Belfast Crown Court on July 5th for the brutal murder of his wife, Katrina Rainey. He must serve at least 18 years before he can even apply for parole.

Tragic Blaze Claims Mother of Six

The horrific attack happened on October 12, 2021, in Maghera. Katrina was trapped inside her car, strapped in and ready to leave for work, when Thomas doused her with a flammable liquid and set her ablaze. Emergency crews found her badly burned outside the smoking vehicle, but she sadly died in hospital.

Investigator Lays Bare Shocking Crime

Detective Inspector Hazel Miller, who led the probe, described the “gruesome details” of the attack. She said Thomas deliberately opened the passenger door before pouring petrol over Katrina and lighting her on fire — a horrific act that shocked the close-knit community.

Family Left Shattered by Untold Grief

DI Miller spoke of the “profound grief” Katrina’s six children and family continue to suffer. She painted a picture of a loving mother taken too soon, leaving a legacy of heartbreak. “The family’s pain is immeasurable,” Miller said, “and their struggle is far from over.”

Justice Served But Pain Remains

The Public Prosecution Service worked alongside police to bring Thomas Rainey to justice. While the court case closes, the family will carry the weight of this tragedy forever. Detective Inspector Miller extended her heartfelt sympathy and called on the community to support the grieving loved ones.

This devastating case stands as a stark warning about the dark consequences of domestic violence and highlights the urgent need to protect vulnerable individuals and families from harm.
