Man Charged with Murder of Elderly Couple on Mersea Island
A man has been charged with murder following the tragic deaths of a married couple on Mersea Island near Colchester. The grim discovery was made after ambulance crews raised concerns at a home on Victory Road on Sunday, April 9, at around 1:30 pm.
Couple Found Dead at Home
Police arrived at the scene to find Stephen Baxter, 61, and his wife Carol Baxter, 64, both dead. Initially, their deaths were treated as unexpected but not suspicious. However, a full investigation was launched to uncover the truth behind the tragedy.
Suspect Arrested and Charged
After an extensive inquiry and toxicology tests, two men and a woman were arrested on July 6 for questioning. While a woman and one man were released on bail, 33-year-old Luke D’Wit from Churchfields, West Mersea, Colchester, has been charged with two counts of murder, possession of a Class A drug, and theft.
D’Wit is due to appear at Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court today, July 8.

Detective Inspector Lydia George, who is leading the case, called the charges “a significant step” in understanding the circumstances around Stephen and Carol Baxter’s deaths. She thanked members of the public who have come forward with information during the complex probe.
