Heavy rainfall in South Korea has resulted in severe flooding, claiming the lives of seven people, with three individuals reported missing, according to officials on Saturday. The continuous downpour has led to the overflowing of a dam, prompting the evacuation of thousands from their homes.

Over the past three days, counties throughout the country have been submerged due to the heavy rains. Local media reports suggest that the death toll may rise further as the situation develops. The interior ministry announced that more than 6,400 residents in the central county of Goesan were instructed to evacuate as the Goesan Dam began overflowing, causing low-lying villages in the vicinity to be submerged.

The seven fatalities, occurring since Friday, were attributed to rain-related landslides and building collapses. Additionally, two individuals were reported missing after being swept away by an overflowing river in North Gyeongsang province, according to the ministry.

As a precautionary measure, all regular train services nationwide were suspended as of 2pm (0500 GMT). However, the Korea Railroad Corporation confirmed that KTX bullet trains remained operational, although adjustments to the schedule might occur.

Prime Minister Han Duck-soo has called upon officials to take preemptive action in response to river overflows and landslides. He also requested assistance from the defence ministry to support ongoing rescue operations.
