The incident occurred on the eastbound carriageway between junctions 22 and 21 shortly after midnight on July 17.

Upon arriving at the scene, officers discovered that both vehicles had veered off the carriageway, resulting in multiple casualties. Unfortunately, the two women, who were passengers in one of the vehicles, succumbed to their injuries at the scene. Their relatives have been informed of the devastating news.

The three remaining occupants of the vehicle were taken to the hospital for treatment, although their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

In connection with the crash, three men who were travelling in the other car have been arrested and are currently in police custody. They received medical attention before being detained.

The eastbound section of the M4 remains closed, and a diversion route has been established via the M49 and M5 to facilitate recovery and investigative procedures.

A spokesperson from Avon and Somerset Police expressed their hope for the road to reopen later in the afternoon. However, they advised drivers to stay updated by following National Highways South West’s Twitter feed for the latest information.
