Mother Sentenced to Life for Stabbing Sons in Larne

A mother, whose identity is protected for the sake of her children, has been handed a life sentence with a minimum of 20 years behind bars. She previously pleaded guilty to the murder of her young son and attempted murder of her baby boy. An indefinite restraining order has also been imposed on her in relation to her three children and their fathers.

Chilling Attack on 2 Young Boys

The horrific incident took place on the morning of March 2, 2020, in Larne. Detective Inspector Michelle Griffin revealed the grim scene: “Police arrived alongside Ambulance Service and Air Ambulance NI to find two young boys stabbed.”

She added, “The older boy, just two years and eight months, had suffered two severe stab wounds to his neck and chest and was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. The baby, only 11 months old, received similar injuries but survived after multiple emergency surgeries.”

Domestic Abuse Shadows Tragedy

Detective Inspector Griffin described the shock of the mother turning violent against her own children: “This case, which will never be forgotten, saw a young life brutally taken, leaving a heartbroken father and family devastated.”

The investigation also uncovered a disturbing layer of domestic abuse. Both the father of the children and the mother’s former husband spoke about her controlling behaviour and emotional abuse towards them.

“Domestic abuse is not just physical and can affect anyone. There is no stigma around male victims,” said DI Griffin. “If you are being threatened, abused, controlled, or intimidated by someone you live with or have a relationship with, please come forward. We will help, listen, and treat you with respect.”

Allegations that the mother was a victim of abuse herself were investigated but not substantiated.
