18 Locked Up After Swansea’s Mayhill Riot Shocks City
A dark night in Mayhill turned the neighbourhood into a warzone. What began as a vigil for local teen Ethan Powell, 19, who tragically died, descended into two hours of savage violence. Cars were set ablaze, homes vandalised, and police officers attacked in a shocking outbreak of chaos.
“Worst Violence in My Lifetime,” Judge Declares
Speaking at Swansea Crown Court, Judge Paul Thomas slammed the rioters as shameless troublemakers who hijacked Ethan’s death for “mass entertainment.” He called it “the worst outbreak of mass violence that has occurred here in my lifetime.” A total of 18 people, aged 18 to 45, have now been jailed for more than 83 years combined.
Harsh Sentences for Mayhill Mob
- Kian Hurley, 24 – 6 years 9 months. Filmed and celebrated the chaos.
- Michael D Parsons, 37 – 6 years 3 months. Played a leading role and spurred others on.
- Mitchell B Meredith, 20 – 6 years in a young offenders’ institution. Known as a “major rabble-rouser” and slapped with a 5-year restraining order for domestic violence.
- Others received sentences ranging from 2 years 8 months to 6 years, many serving time in young offenders’ institutions.
All will serve half their sentences in prison before licence release. Three more youth defendants will be sentenced soon.
Community Left Terrified and Devastated
Judge Thomas highlighted the terror wreaked on residents, including the Romain family whose home was pelted with bricks while young children screamed inside. Adam Romain desperately pleaded for help as his kids were caught up in the violence.
South Wales Police praised the community for helping with evidence and praised their own investigation as “of the absolutely highest standard,” despite some criticism in an independent review for their initial response.
Detective Inspector Gareth Jones said: “This was violence of an extreme nature — a calculated defiance of the law. The sheer number involved terrified residents. They banded together, armed with sticks, bricks, and weapons, with no regard for others or the deadly risks.”
The 2021 Mayhill riot remains a dark chapter in Swansea’s recent history — a disgraceful affront to the community’s peace and safety.
