Colchester Rapist Jailed for Eight Years
Miridon Bera, 30, has been locked up for eight-and-a-half years after being found guilty of raping a woman he met at a club in Colchester. The jury at Ipswich Crown Court heard how Bera lured the victim back to his flat in July 2019 before attacking her.
Specialist Team Secures Justice
The case was led by the Adult Sexual Abuse Investigation Team (ASAIT), with backing from Essex’s Centre for Action on Rape and Abuse (CARA). Detective Sergeant Liv Howells praised the victim’s strength and vowed to keep fighting for those affected by sexual violence.
“This is the reason we do the work that we do, to help people who need us,” said DS Howells. “Nobody should have to live in fear while enjoying a night out. Anyone who thinks this behaviour is acceptable is a predator.”
Victim Praises Police and Support Groups
Speaking after the conviction, the woman thanked Essex Police and CARA for their unwavering support through a grueling three-and-a-half-year ordeal. She called for urgent reforms in the criminal justice system to better protect victims.
“DC Howells and her team have been incredible. The support I’ve received has gone above and beyond my expectations during this incomprehensibly hard journey,” she said.
