Site Locked Down: No Access or Waste Dumping Allowed at Sheffield Skip Yard
A court has slammed the brakes on waste chaos at M White Skips Limited on Worthing Road, Sheffield. A Restriction Order now bans anyone from entering or dumping rubbish on the site, aiming to shield local residents and the environment from further damage.
Yorkshire’s First Ever Restriction Order
This is a landmark move – the first time such powers have been wielded in Yorkshire. Sheffield Magistrates Court granted the order after hearing evidence from South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service. Although they didn’t get to hear from all Environment Agency witnesses, the court decided the ban must stay until another hearing on 3 May 2023.
Strict Conditions to Control the Mess
- Access to the site is banned except for waste removal only
- No new waste can be brought in or processed
- Regular inspections by the Environment Agency are ongoing
Jacqui Tootill, South Yorkshire Area Environment Manager at the Environment Agency, said: “Our officers have already taken enforcement action to issue a restriction order for this site – preventing any further waste from being dumped or treated there and ensuring that the operator can only access the site in order to remove waste.
We are inspecting the site regularly and continuing to 1 with partners to ensure this order is followed and also working to ensure the site is cleared. We will take further enforcement action if necessary and continue to investigate the alleged offending linked to the activities at this site.”
Serious Pollution Risks Prompt Crackdown
Both the Environment Agency’s Environmental Crime Officer and a South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue official warned the court about the site’s dangerous condition. It posed a “risk of serious pollution to the environment and serious harm to human health,” they said. That’s why the restriction order was essential.
The Environment Agency and South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue are now working hand-in-hand in a criminal investigation into the operations at the site. Locals can hope for a cleaner, safer neighbourhood soon.
