Man Cleared of Murder After Shocking Stabbing Death

Piers Brazier, 39, was accused of murdering Scott Cooper, 33, in a Ryde flat back in January 2022. Mr Cooper was found brutally stabbed multiple times in the face and neck, his body discovered upside down in the bathroom of Brazier’s flat at 74 George Street.

Gruesome Crime Scene and Trial Drama

According to the Crown Prosecution Service, Brazier, who struggled with heroin addiction, was charged with Cooper’s murder. The victim had collapsed in the bedroom before being dragged down the hallway and into the bathroom where he was found.

Despite the evidence piled against him, Brazier firmly denied the charges throughout two drawn-out trials. Many expected a prison sentence, but the jury wasn’t convinced beyond reasonable doubt. In a stunning turn, they found Brazier not guilty in January 2023.

Historic Trial on the Isle of Wight Ends Without Conviction

This case marked the first murder trial on the Isle of Wight in over 30 years. The original June trial ended in a hung jury, forcing a re-trial that concluded in Brazier’s acquittal at the Isle of Wight Crown Court.

The jury also heard about Brazier’s past, including a massive £900,000 burglary for which he served seven years.

Police Under Scrutiny Amid Controversial Verdict

Hampshire Constabulary’s handling of the case came under fire after officers delayed returning to the flat for 12 hours despite seeing blood on Brazier when they first arrived. This prompted a probe by the Independent Office for Police Conduct involving interviews with three control room staff.

Earlier this year, police expressed disappointment at the verdict but stressed they respected the jury’s decision.

Brazier’s Death Adds Mystery to Case

Just four months after the not guilty verdict, Piers Brazier passed away. The details surrounding his death remain unclear, leaving many questions unanswered.
