Man Admits Manslaughter of Beloved Grandmother June Fox-Roberts
Luke Deeley, 26, of Pontypridd, appeared at Newport Crown Court today and pleaded guilty to manslaughter by diminished responsibility over the death of 65-year-old June Fox-Roberts on 21 November 2021.
Deeley was handed an indefinite hospital order with restrictions, meaning he won’t be released until deemed safe.
Police Reveal Horrific Discovery
Detective Chief Inspector Matthew Powell of South Wales Police Major Crime said:
“On Sunday, 21 November 2021, South Wales Police were called by one of June’s children who, alongside a close family friend, found June deceased inside her home in the most horrific of circumstances.
“Luke Deeley has pleaded guilty to manslaughter by diminished responsibility. The hospital and restriction order means he will only be released when it is safe to do so.
“This investigation involved months of thorough psychiatric evaluation alongside criminal inquiries.
“Thanks to key witnesses, the Llantwit Fardre community, and partner agencies, the case progressed swiftly for June’s family, who have waited with patience and dignity for answers.
“June’s family has been supported throughout by specially trained officers, and we hope this sentence brings them some closure, helping them grieve with understanding.”
Heartfelt Tribute from June’s Family
June’s family released an emotional statement:
“On 21 November 2021, our world shattered. June Fox-Roberts was cruelly taken from us by a stranger.
“June was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who loved spending time with family. She shared her skills in baking, gardening, knitting, and crafts, telling enchanting stories of the ‘good old days.’ She had just met her great-granddaughter that month — a precious moment stolen by Luke’s actions.
“June was vibrant, hardworking, and resilient. She ran a chicken farm, helped disadvantaged children, managed a coffee shop, worked as an IT contractor, and was a landlady. She had friends worldwide from her travels and was excited to retire and spend time with loved ones.
“She lived life fully with a wicked sense of humour and an infectious laugh. June loved nature, horse riding, baking, and her German Shepherds, the last cared for by her daughters as she wished.
“Her generosity knew no bounds — guests never left her home without a cuppa and a good chat. It’s devastating that Luke could be so cruel to her for no reason. June was unafraid of death but wanted to pass peacefully surrounded by family. Luke stole that chance from all of us, taking her life years too soon.
“June had plans to build her dream bungalow with a beautiful garden and allotment. Her children continue her legacy through gardening and with support from donations via GoFundMe.
“We thank South Wales Police for their swift and diligent work in bringing Luke Deeley to justice. We believe this sentence is the best possible outcome.
“Once met, June was unforgettable — a force of nature, our family’s rock and safe space. We will feel this loss forever.”
