Predator Carer Jailed 18 Years After Attacking Vulnerable Woman
In a shocking verdict, Jossy Joseph has finally landed behind bars, 18 years after sexually assaulting a vulnerable woman in a Norfolk care home. The 55-year-old, who fled to India after the attack, has been sentenced to four years in prison for his vile crime.
Calculated Attack on Vulnerable Victim
Joseph, described as “clearly a threat to women” by the judge at Norwich Crown Court, admitted the sexual assault which happened between October 16 and 19, 2005. The victim, suffering from brain damage due to a past severe head injury, was living in a residential care home in Swanton Novers at the time.
Judge Shaw condemned Joseph’s actions as a gross “abuse of trust” and highlighted the careful planning involved. Initially hired as a carer in April 2005, Joseph was warned about attending work under the influence of alcohol. Despite this, he stayed on in a downgraded role handling maintenance and driving duties.
Detectives Trace and Extradite Fugitive
A female carer testified to seeing the victim withdrawn and agitated days after the attack, revealing that Joseph had entered her room at night and assaulted her. Norfolk police zeroed in on Joseph as the primary suspect.
After a lengthy international hunt, Norfolk officers finally tracked Joseph down in India and secured his extradition in late 2022. He returned to the UK in January 2023, was immediately charged, and remanded in custody.
Police and Family Respond
Detective Inspector Kevin Barber said: “Joseph is a cruel sexual predator who betrayed the trust of the victim, her family, and the care home. We are committed to bringing offenders to justice. Sexual offences by care staff are thankfully rare in Norfolk.”
The victim’s family welcomed the sentence and stressed the importance of improving safeguards for vulnerable people in care homes moving forward.
