Notorious UK Drug Dealer Caught After Daring Escape Across Europe
Christopher Ashurst, a notorious UK drug dealer, has been finally jailed after fleeing the country to dodge justice. The Blackburn-born crook tried to outrun the law by disappearing to Spain, then Mexico, before being nabbed in Amsterdam. He’s now behind bars for peddling huge amounts of cocaine, heroin, ketamine, and cannabis worth hundreds of thousands of pounds on the streets.
Operation Venetic Cracks Down on Crime
Ashurst’s capture was thanks to Operation Venetic, a nationwide blitz on organised crime. This sweep was fuelled by the takedown of Encrochat—a secret encrypted messaging system criminals relied on to dodge police. After law enforcement agencies across the globe cracked the system’s codes, the Encrochat servers were shut down in 2020.
The National Crime Agency and Lancashire Constabulary led the charge, exposing a network of criminals who’d used Encrochat to coordinate illegal deals. Since then, UK police have kept up relentless pressure on offenders tied to this shadowy tech.
From Blackburn to Prison: Ashurst’s Long Road to Justice
- Ashurst fled to Spain, then Mexico, avoiding capture for three years.
- He was eventually arrested in Amsterdam and extradited back to the UK.
- On September 11, 2023, Preston Crown Court sentenced him to 10 years behind bars.
Police Warn: No Hiding from Crime-Busting Efforts
“Like many others who tried to hide behind Encrochat, Ashurst mistakenly thought he could traffic drugs with impunity, under the radar of the police, but how wrong he was,” said Detective Sergeant Stu Peall of East Police.
Peall stressed that fleeing the UK didn’t shield Ashurst from justice. “We remain committed to hunting down those involved in serious crime,” he added, highlighting the fight against drug trafficking that fuels violence and exploitation in communities.
“I hope this sentence sends a clear message that we are determined to rid our streets of this criminality and make our communities safer,” Peall concluded.
