Real IRA Member Gavin Coyle Jailed Over Brutal Police Car Bombing
Gavin Coyle, 46, has been handed a six-year jail term at Belfast Crown Court for his role in a chilling attempted murder of a police officer in 2008. A convicted Real IRA member, Coyle was found guilty of terrorist offences linked to a bomb blast that nearly claimed an officer’s life near Castlederg.
Deadly Bomb Attack in 2008
The attack took place in May 2008 when a bomb exploded under a police officer’s car, causing horrible injuries. Detective Inspector Hazel Miller described it as a “cowardly, calculated, and cold-blooded attack with one aim: to take the life of a police officer.”
Miraculously, the injured officer managed to stop the car and escape moments before it burst into flames. Quick action by paramedics, fellow officers, and the public saved his life.
Coyle Sentenced for Terrorism Charges
Coyle admitted to being a Real IRA member and providing property for terrorist activities. Today, the court sentenced him to six years, with two-thirds of the term to be served behind bars.
Detective Inspector Miller praised the first responders, saying, “Today, Coyle has been held accountable for his role in this nightmarish attack.” She stressed the stark contrast between those who serve and protect and those who seek to spread violence.
Lasting Impact on Victim and Community
The injured officer suffered deep puncture wounds and lacerations, requiring multiple surgeries. The attack left scars not just on the victim but also on his family and loved ones.
Miller urged the public to keep reporting any suspicious or criminal activity related to terrorism, emphasising community resilience. “We will continue to robustly investigate and disrupt the criminal and terrorist activities of those who bring violence to our doorsteps,” she warned.
