Wickford Man Busted for Facebook Marketplace Scam
A 30-year-old man from Wickford has been charged with 18 offences in connection to a social media marketplace scam that duped sellers across Essex, Suffolk, and Cambridgeshire.
Fake Bank Transfers Fool Victims
Stephen Stokes, of Arterial Road, allegedly tricked sellers on Facebook Marketplace. Victims say they met buyers who promised bank transfers for items sold. Yet, despite appearing to complete the sale, no money ever hit their accounts.
Crime Team Cracks Down After Multiple Complaints
The Economic Crime Team launched a thorough probe after numerous victims spoke out. Stokes now faces 17 counts of fraud by false representation and one count of sending threatening messages.
He is set to appear at Southend Magistrates’ Court on October 30.
Police Urge Caution and Witnesses to Speak Up
Scam hotspots include South Ockendon, Great Notley, Basildon, Rochford, Witham, and Grays. Authorities praise victims for their vital role in nabbing Stokes and urge anyone else affected or with information to come forward.
Remember: Always exercise caution when selling online and report suspicious activity to police immediately.
