1000+ police officers deployed as protests spark arrests across London
Multiple arrests over weekend disorder
More than 1,000 officers were on duty during weekend protests in London. Tensions boiled over with nine people arrested on Saturday alone. Two were held for assaulting police, while seven faced charges related to public order offences.
Racial hatred charges follow Trafalgar Square incident
Early Sunday morning saw two further arrests on suspicion of inciting racial hatred. These came after police launched a public appeal regarding an incident in Trafalgar Square on Saturday night.
Details of those charged
- Kadirul Islam, 33 – No fixed address. Charged with racially aggravated public order offence after shouting racist abuse in Waterloo Road. Due in Croydon Magistrates’ Court on 1 December.
- Emma Turvey, 51 – From Clarence Road, Grays, Essex. Charged with public order offence after throwing a can of beer at a protester in Whitehall. Scheduled to appear at 1 Magistrates’ Court on 13 November.
- Atif Sharif, 41 – Albert Road, Walthamstow. Faces causing actual bodily harm charges after assaulting an officer in Whitehall, causing a head injury. Remanded and due at Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court on 30 October.
- Laura Davis, 22 – Hendon Way, Barnet. Charged with racially aggravated public order offence after displaying a threatening, racist placard near Piccadilly Circus. Due at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on 29 November.
- Unnamed second Piccadilly Circus suspect – Arrested for similar racially aggravated offence related to a placard but later released following Crown Prosecution Service decision.
- 16-year-old youth – Charged with public order offence for verbal abuse at officers escorting protestors in Grosvenor Gardens. Due at Bromley Magistrates’ Court on 15 November.
