Leeds United Fan Banned for 3 Years Over Offensive Emiliano Sala Chants
A Leeds United supporter has been slapped with a three-year football banning order after making vile chants about the tragic death of Cardiff City’s Emiliano Sala during a match at Elland Road in August.
Harry Keyes Caught Making Aeroplane Gestures
22-year-old Harry Keyes was arrested after police spotted him making aeroplane gestures, a cruel reference to Sala’s fatal 2019 plane crash. He pleaded guilty to a Section 5 public order offence at Leeds Magistrates Court.
Keyes was fined £107, hit with £85 prosecution costs, and a £43 victim surcharge. The ban means he cannot attend any Leeds United games, home or away, for the next three years.
Police Crack Down on Offensive Behaviour
“Directing chants, comments or gestures that refer to tragic incidents at rival fans is highly offensive and can cause genuine distress to those affected,” said Chief Inspector Pete Hall, who led policing at the match.
“It has absolutely no place in football. Fans should know the authorities and clubs take this seriously.”
“Most fans want to see firm action against such behaviour, and we will work closely with Leeds United and visiting clubs to investigate and issue banning orders where necessary.”
Ban Includes Pubs Near Elland Road
The football banning order also stops Keyes from entering pubs or bars within one mile of Elland Road during Leeds matches, ensuring the offensive conduct stays well away from the stadium.
