Cop Caught Drink Driving Axed Without Warning
Police Constable Paul Woodward has been sacked without notice after a drink-driving conviction earlier this year. The swift decision by Assistant Chief Constable Jim Colwell on November 29 sends a clear message about the consequences of such reckless behaviour.
Crash, Flee and Guilty Plea
The incident happened on March 26, 2023, when PC Woodward crashed his car and then fled the scene. He was arrested under Section 5 of the Road Traffic Act 1988. Facing Plymouth Magistrates’ Court on June 28, he pleaded guilty. His punishment? A 17-month driving ban and an £890 fine.
Top Brass Slam ‘Deliberate’ Offence
A/CC Jim Colwell slammed Woodward’s actions as a deliberate criminal offence, not a mere mistake under pressure.
“The offence is a very serious matter. Getting behind the wheel of a vehicle and driving whilst unfit due to alcohol is entirely inconsistent with the expectation held by the public in terms of how an officer should conduct themselves,” said Colwell.
Gross Misconduct and a Career Ended
The verdict was clear: Woodward’s actions amounted to gross misconduct. He has now been banned from policing or any law enforcement work.
Superintendent Alex Doughty, Head of Professional Standards, expressed deep disappointment. “This behaviour does not meet the high standards expected of police officers,” he said, backing the tough ruling and highlighting the grave dangers of drink driving.
