Man Jailed Over Pipe Bomb Parts in Belfast Police Sting

Explosive Find in West Belfast

Patrick McCann, 42, has been slapped with a three-year jail term at Laganside Crown Court after a police probe uncovered pipe bomb parts in his possession. The Police Service’s Terrorism Investigation Unit (TIU) swooped during a planned search in west Belfast on 29th September 2019, seizing explosive components designed to modify bombs.

Guilty Plea and Court Action

McCann had already pleaded guilty to four counts of possession of explosives under suspicious circumstances. Forensic evidence tied him directly to the seized bomb-making items. Arrested and charged in May 2020, he now faces two years behind bars and another year on licence. On release, McCann will also face 10 years of strict terrorist notification requirements.

Police Praise and Public Appeal

Detective Superintendent Griffin praised the TIU for removing dangerous materials from the streets. He warned that tackling such serious threats remains a priority and called on the public to report any suspicious activity. “Anyone with information should contact police on the non-emergency number 101,” he urged.
