Ex-Police Officer Jailed for Attempted Murder in Shocking Manchester Attack

James Riley, a former Preston police officer, has been slammed with a 16-year prison sentence after admitting to attempted murder at Manchester Crown Court. The chilling incident began at a hotel on Brook Street last November.

Life-Threatening Attack on Woman at Manchester Hotel

Greater Manchester Police responded to urgent welfare concerns for a woman in her 20s on 10 November 2022. Emergency crews found her fighting for life and rushed her to hospital, placing her in an induced coma. Thankfully, she woke the next day but faces ongoing injuries from the brutal assault.

Riley’s Disturbing Actions After the Attack

Off-duty Riley shockingly called his family for 10 minutes before anonymously dialing for an ambulance — then fled the scene. He attempted to dodge arrest by crashing his car nearby and hopping on buses, taxis, and even hitchhiking to Lancashire. CCTV footage revealed him withdrawing cash and ditching his phone in a desperate bid to avoid capture.

Manhunt Leads to Arrest and Police Walkout

After a massive search involving specialist officers across three forces in the North West, Riley was caught in West Yorkshire in the early hours. Lancashire Police immediately suspended him, launched internal probes, and later dismissed him without notice. He’s now blacklisted by the College of Policing.

Police Praise Victim’s Courage and Vow Tough Action

“We hope the victim can now begin to move on, knowing Riley is behind bars and won’t hurt anyone else,” said Detective Sgt Heidi Cullum of GMP’s Major Incident Team. She praised the teamwork between Lancashire and West Yorkshire forces in nabbing Riley swiftly.

Detective Superintendent Zoe Mainey, Head of Professional Standards at Lancashire Police, added: “Riley’s behaviour fell far short of police standards. We are committed to tackling domestic abuse and holding offenders accountable. Our swift action in dismissing him shows we take these allegations seriously.”

Lancashire Constabulary condemned Riley’s crimes and sent support to the victim and all affected. They reaffirmed their dedication to protecting victims and maintaining public trust in policing.
