Four Found Dead in Norfolk Home Sparks Police Probe

A grim discovery rocked Costessey on Friday, January 19, when police found four bodies at a property on Allan Bedford Crescent. Norfolk’s Chief Constable Paul Sanford has vowed full transparency amid growing questions over the force’s response.

Urgent Welfare Call Ignored: Police Miss 999 Plea

The chilling discovery came after a concerned neighbour alerted police about those inside the house. Officers arrived at around 7:15 a.m. but, unable to make contact, forced entry to the property.

Shockingly, a man inside had called 999 before 6 a.m., but police were not sent. This crucial failure has led Norfolk Constabulary to self-refer the case to the Independent Office of Police Conduct (IOPC) for a full investigation.

There was also a police visit to the same address on December 14 linked to a missing person inquiry.

Chief Constable Sends Condolences, Promises Accountability

“This is a tragic and horrific incident,” said Chief Constable Paul Sanford. “My thoughts and those of the entire constabulary remain with the family of those involved. We know this has caused shock and distress across the community and beyond.”

On the investigation, Mr Sanford added, “The IOPC will independently review our response to the earlier 999 call. I am choosing my words carefully to protect the integrity of this process, not to hide anything.”

Mr Sanford confirmed that alongside the IOPC probe, there will be an inquest examining the circumstances of the deaths and police involvement. He insisted that all questions on the force’s handling would be properly answered.

The constabulary is also undergoing a routine inspection by His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services, which includes assessing 999 call responses. The chief has asked for this to be expanded to reassure the public.

With investigations ongoing, the Norfolk community demands answers—and urgent reforms—to stop such tragedies from happening again.
