Man Jailed for Carrying Knife at Manchester Railway Station
A 46-year-old man has been sentenced to six and a half months in jail after being caught with a kitchen knife at Manchester Piccadilly station.
Knife Found After Drug Sniffer Dog Alert
Jonathon Carroll, from Isaac Close, Salford, admitted possession of a bladed article in a public place. He appeared at Manchester and Salford Magistrates Court on Saturday, 16 March 2024, where he was promptly jailed.
The day before his arrest, plainclothes British Transport Police officers stopped Carroll after a drug detection dog signalled the presence of drugs. When he acted suspiciously and became agitated, officers searched his black holdall, discovering a five-inch kitchen knife inside.
No Excuse for Carrying a Deadly Weapon
On caution, Carroll claimed he didn’t declare the knife because officers were only searching for drugs.
“There is no reason to carry a potentially lethal weapon in a public place,” said investigating officer PS Andy Platt. “Carroll knew this full well and became agitated and aggressive as soon as one of our dogs detected something.”
“Carroll offered no excuse for carrying the knife. Thankfully, it has now been taken off the streets and Carroll is behind bars. Hopefully, he now realises there is a price to pay for bringing a blade onto the rail network.”
