Gloucestershire Cops Nominated for Top Bravery Award After Rooftop Standoff
Two Gloucester police heroes have been nominated for the National Police Bravery Awards 2024. PC James Taylor and PS Sarah-Jane Tucker showed nerves of steel and quick thinking during a tense rooftop showdown with a knife-wielding man.
Knife Threat on Rooftop Sparks Dramatic Police Response
On the evening of 16 March 2023, PC Taylor, investigating a dangerous drugs network, and PS Tucker, the local sergeant in Stroud, rushed to a call about a violent man armed with a large knife and a metal pole atop a residential outbuilding.
PC Taylor stayed calm and talked the man down, stopping him from fleeing and potentially harming the public. His sharp negotiation and steady approach kept the situation from exploding.
Brave Taser Take-Down Ends Dangerous Standoff
Realising the man’s bulky clothing made Taser use tricky, PC Taylor called for firearms backup while PS Tucker secured the scene below. Suddenly, the suspect leapt off the roof brandishing his weapons.
In a flash, PC Taylor deployed his Taser, incapacitating the attacker and allowing both officers to restrain him safely.
Force Leaders Praise Officers’ Courage and Skill
Stephen James, Chair of Gloucestershire Police Federation, hailed their “selfless bravery,” highlighting their key role in protecting the public. Chief Constable Rod Hansen expressed “immense pride” in their expert negotiation and calm decision-making under pressure.
The nomination for the National Police Bravery Awards celebrates PC Taylor and PS Tucker’s fearless dedication to duty and the safety of their community.
Their heroic actions underline Gloucestershire Constabulary’s unyielding courage in the face of danger.
