Angle Grinder Thief Nabbed in Brighton
George Jhugroo, 24, from Mitcham, has been handed 33 months behind bars after a brazen bike robbery in Brighton. The Lewes Crown Court sentenced him on May 23 following his guilty plea to robbery and possession of an offensive weapon.
Quick-Thinking Public Foils Crime
The drama unfolded on May 28, 2023. The victim had locked his bike on Kings Road near Cavendish Place and strolled the lower seafront promenade. Moments later, sparks flew as Jhugroo used an angle grinder to cut through the lock.
Despite a crowd gathering and begging him to stop, Jhugroo threatened to harm them with the grinder. After cutting the lock, he hopped on the bike and made a getaway towards Norfolk Square. During the scuffle, Jhugroo injured himself and the stolen bike was recovered.
Captured After Seeking Hospital Treatment
Injured and desperate, Jhugroo went to Royal Sussex County Hospital, where police were waiting. He was arrested and released on strict bail conditions, before being officially charged on February 5, 2024.
Detective Constable James Botting said: “Thanks to quick action from witnesses, we caught Jhugroo fast. We hope this sentence puts others off trying similar stunts. We also remind the public to prioritise safety—if you see a crime, call 999 immediately.”
Justice Served for Brighton Bike Theft
Jhugroo’s guilty plea sealed his fate on May 23, sending a strong message that crime doesn’t pay in Brighton or beyond.
