BMW’s Spa-Francorchamps Dream Derailed by Crash and Oil Leak

The legendary Spa-Francorchamps circuit played host to a dramatic 8-hour endurance showdown — and the BMW Motorrad World Endurance Team rode a thrilling, gut-wrenching rollercoaster. Riders Markus Reiterberger (GER), Sylvain Guintoli (FRA), and Ilya Mikhalchik (UKR) launched their #37 BMW M 1000 RR with podium hopes. But fate had other ideas.

Reiterberger Blasts Off But Crash Spells Disaster

Starting fourth, Markus Reiterberger shot forward from the get-go, pushing their machine to the sharp end of the pack. The trio battled fiercely throughout the race. Then, disaster struck in hour four.

Sylvain Guintoli inexplicably lost control and crashed hard. Although the team heroically dragged the bike back to the pits, an oil leak emerged. Safety concerns forced the BMW team to call time early on their challenge — heartbreak on the Belgian tarmac.

Superstock Drama for BMW’s Other Teams

  • Japanese squad Team Étoile grabbed pole with their #25 BMW M 1000 RR, piloted by Yudai Kamei, Hikari Okubo, and Kazuki Watanabe.
  • The Tecmas-MRP-BMW Racing Team, with Kenny Foray, Jan Bühn, and Loïc Arbel on the #9 bike, started fifth in class.

Both sides ran strong in the top three for much of the race. But the #25 bike stalled on track, forcing Okubo to push back to the pits. The #9 suffered a crash yet managed to carry on.

Eyes On Suzuka: BMW’s Redemption Race

BMW Motorsport’s Technical Director Christian Gonschor admitted the early Spa exit stings but stressed safety came first. “The oil leak after Guintoli’s crash left us no choice but to retire,” he said. The team is now setting sights on the famed Suzuka 8 Hours in Japan on July 21.

Team Manager Werner Daemen echoed the safety-first approach and highlighted upcoming test sessions in Japan. Guintoli stayed upbeat despite the setback: “We’re already focused on Suzuka and ready to bounce back.”

The Spa heartbreak underscores the brutal nature of endurance racing — where resilience, teamwork, and relentless grit are the only roads to glory.
