Illegal Waste Kingpin Stuart Bedford Jailed Over Massive Tyre Blaze
Stuart Bedford, 62, and his wife Vicky, 51, have been hauled before Bradford Crown Court over running illegal waste sites across Yorkshire. The Environment Agency led the crack prosecution.
Stuart Gets 12 Months for Environmental Crime
Bedford was slapped with a 12-month prison sentence for running waste operations in Bradford and Doncaster without any environmental permits. He was also found guilty of storing waste in a way that risked polluting the environment and harming public health.
Judge HHJ Gibson told Bedford he deliberately broke the law, knowing full well the sites held far more tyres than legally allowed. At the Bradford yard alone, over 600,000 tyres worth around £1 million were stored—far beyond legal limits.
Fiery Disaster Causes Chaos in Bradford
In November 2020, disaster struck when a massive fire ripped through Bedford’s Bradford site on Spring Mill Street. The blaze sparked huge travel chaos, school closures, and business shutdowns. Nearly 100 firefighters battled the inferno that blazed out of control for hours.
Prior to the fire, Environment Agency officers had warned the Bedfords to clear the dangerous tyre stockpile, but the couple ignored the enforcement notice. The judge slammed Stuart’s reckless storage as a direct cause of the catastrophic fire.
Wife Vicky Avoids Jail but Must Do Rehab
Vicky Bedford, who now has no fixed address, escaped jail but got a 12-month community order plus 15 days of rehabilitation activity requirement for her part in the rogue waste operation.
Fugitives Nabbed in Spain and Brought Back to Face Justice
The Bedfords tried to dodge the law by fleeing to Spain. But international arrest warrants caught up with them, and they were extradited back to the UK to face trial.
Stuart also received concurrent sentences totaling 12 months. The court made it clear: this illegal waste racket and the ensuing blaze caused massive disruption and put lives at risk.
