Two men who fled mid-trial over a deadly road crash near Wilmslow have been caught at Manchester Airport.
Osama Saeed and Asgar Taj Arrested on UK Soil
Osama Saeed, 32, and Asgar Taj, 35, were arrested on Monday 8 July at Manchester Airport after flying in from Abu Dhabi. Both were promptly detained by officers from Cheshire Police’s Serious and Complex Collision Investigation Unit, with support from the Roads and Crime Unit and GMP.
The pair will appear at Minshull Street Crown Court this afternoon.
Fleeing Justice After Deadly Street Race
The two men had fled the country in October 2023 while facing trial for causing death by dangerous driving. The fatal crash happened in 2020 during a street race on the A34 near Wilmslow, killing one man.
They both pleaded guilty via remote court hearings abroad but skipped their sentencing, forcing the court to sentence them in absentia to 12 years each. Saeed is from St Pauls Road, Manningham, Bradford. Taj hails from Heather Grove, Bradford.
Police Vow: No Escape for Cheshire Criminals
Inspector Steve Griffiths of Cheshire Police said: “If you commit a crime in Cheshire, you will be arrested and held accountable. Saeed and Taj were met at the gate by a team of officers and promptly detained. They will face court today.”
A third defendant, Mohammad Zubair Chaudhry, 31, from Kingsway, Cheadle, also pleaded guilty but remains on the run. Police continue to hunt for him.
