Man Charged After Leeds Riot Flips Police Car and Sets Bus Ablaze
A violent riot tore through Harehills, Leeds, on Thursday evening, leaving a police car flipped over and a bus set on fire. The chaos raged from around 5pm and spilled into the early hours of Friday.
Suspect Held on Arson and Violent Disorder Charges
Iustin Dobre, 37, from Clifton Mount in Harehills, has been charged with violent disorder and reckless arson endangering life. West Yorkshire Police confirmed he is in custody and set to appear at Leeds Magistrates’ Court on Monday.
Five More Arrested as Police Crack Down on Disorder
Police have also detained five additional suspects linked to the unrest. All remain in custody as inquiries continue. Four others initially arrested have been bailed pending further investigation.
Riots Sparked by Hostility Towards Social Workers
The violent disorder began after police responded to reports of social workers facing hostility during a child protection case. Officers were assaulted and forced to escort social care staff to safety. Following this, crowds damaged vehicles and started fires, with over 30 vehicles reported vandalised, according to Assistant Chief Constable Pat Twiggs.
Vigil Passes Peacefully Amid Increased Policing
On Friday evening, a vigil in Harehills passed without incident. A woman was arrested for a public order offence during the event but was later released with a conditional caution. West Yorkshire Police have promised a beefed-up presence in the area over the coming days to restore calm and safety.
