Brutal Murder Verdict: Man Found Guilty of Stabbing Pensioner to Death
A 46-year-old man has been convicted of brutally stabbing 72-year-old Michael Martin to death in his Worthing home. Sukhkit Bains, also known as Sukhjit Bains, was found guilty of murder at Isleworth Crown Court on Tuesday, October 29.
Violent Attack Ends in Fatal Stabbing
Bains, from Brighton Road, Southgate, launched a vicious assault on his acquaintance Mr Martin inside the victim’s St Botolph’s Road house. The attack left Martin with fatal stab wounds and multiple injuries. His body was discovered by a family member on March 22 at around 6:30pm. Paramedics confirmed he was dead at the scene.
Detective Inspector Amanda Zinyama of the Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team called the attack “distressing.” She said: “Bains carried out a sustained and violent attack upon him in his home. We were determined to get answers for Mr Martin’s family and to ensure that Bains was brought to justice.”
Attempt to Cover Up Crime Fails
After the savage attack, Bains tried to destroy evidence. The court heard he wiped down the murder weapon, moved a blood-soaked rug, and washed his own bloodied clothes before fleeing. He was later arrested at an address in Crawley and charged with murder.
Family Pays Heartbreaking Tribute
Mr Martin’s family described him as a loving father and grandfather. They said: “He always had time for people, found solace in making friends and would do anything to help anyone. We had the best dad in the world. He was our hero and he taught us to love, to be kind, and to always look after each other.”
They labelled Bains “a violent predator that preyed on the vulnerable” and expressed deep grief over their loss.
Detective Inspector Zinyama thanked witnesses and the public for their support, adding: “We are pleased that the jury has found Bains guilty of this crime, and he now faces sentencing.”
Bains is due to be sentenced at Isleworth Crown Court on November 1 and is expected to face a lengthy prison term for his brutal crime.
