South West Water Admits Guilt Over Multiple Sewage Spills
South West Water has pleaded guilty to five serious offences after illegally dumping sewage and breaching environmental permits across Devon and Cornwall. The bombshell admission came today at Plymouth Magistrates’ Court amid growing concerns over the firm’s environmental record.
Illegal Dumps at Hooe Lake and Beyond
The charges relate to a string of sewage discharges in 2019 and 2020. The firm confessed to two offences at the Hooe Lake Sewage Pumping Station in Plymstock between August and September 2020. Here, untreated sewage was discharged, breaking strict environmental permit conditions.
South West Water also admitted to dumping sewage into the picturesque Polperro Harbour in August 2019 — a scandalous breach of environmental regulations in a protected area.
Twice Guilty Over Toxic Releases at Bodmin Road
The company further pled guilty over two separate incidents in August and September 2020 at Bodmin Road, Whitleigh, Plymouth. Both charges relate to discharging poisonous, noxious, or polluting matter into inland freshwaters without lawful permission.
What South West Water Admitted
- Causing untreated sewage discharge at Hooe Lake, breaching permit conditions.
- Illegal raw sewage overflow despite permit limits.
- Unauthorised sewage release into Polperro Harbour.
- Two counts of polluting inland freshwaters at Bodmin Road sites.
The sentencing has been adjourned and will be announced at a later date. Environmental campaigners and local communities now await the court’s decision on appropriate penalties — eager to see if South West Water faces a hefty fine or stricter regulatory action.
With water quality issues already under the spotlight, this case adds fuel to growing calls for tougher controls on water companies.
